Marching bandMarching Band is required for all incoming freshmen and students new to the Riggs Band program. Students already in the program sign a contract the previous year committing themselves to marching band or an alternative project. Practices take place before school.
The Marching Band is routinely seen at the Riggs Homecoming Parade and performing at Halftime of the Homecoming Game. In 2017 they are also seen at the Ft. Pierre "Bison"tenniel Celebration Parade and the River City Band Festival in Chamberlain. |

pierrecussion DrumlineAuditions for this group take place at the end of the Spring Semester. Percussionists grades 9-12 are welcome to audition, and any musician in grades 10-12 may audition.
Practices are held once a week before school at minimum. Students are held to a high standard and expected to put in work outside of practice time. The PIERREcussion Drumline is often seen at the State AA Basketball Tournament performing at halftime, and often join Jefferson Elementary in celebrating National Walk to School day. Other performances vary. |

Concert bandAfter the conclusion of "Marching Band Season", the Concert Bands take shape. The Riggs Band has two concert bands - Concert Band that meets first period consists of all students grades 9-12. Symphonic Band is advanced auditioned group. Auditions take place in Spring of the previous year and is open to grades 10-12.
Students in these groups make up the Emerald Regiment Pep Band. All students are encouraged to attend festivals and honor bands, as well as audition for All State Band and Orchestra and participate in Region Small Group Contest. |

Jazz band Jazz Band is a volunteer, extra curricular group that meets once to twice a week before school. The group focuses on jazz music, expanding students' musical knowledge and vocabulary. Students are encouraged to improvise, solo, and audition for All State Jazz.
The group has been seen around the community, performing at the Northridge Plaza and at Christmas at the Capitol. They sometimes travel to Sioux Falls for the Jazz on the Upper Great Plains Festival. The Jazz Band has recently started to tour the Pierre School District to bring awareness to music education. |

Every other year, the theater, choir, and band department team up to present a musical. On those years, a musical pit band is created of students that volunteer their time.
